Devices, Shop Supplies, And More That You Can’t Live Without: Fireball Tool’s Founder Jason Gives United States His List

Anyone who has actually ever spent whenever checking out other workshops knows that you are constantly seeing some device or solution or supply that you didn’t learn about or think of for your very own workshop. Those are the minutes when you slap on your own on the side of the head as well as claim “Why really did not I think of that?” or “I really did not even understand something like that existed!” I know that when I opened my hot rod shop in the very early 2000’s, I had no idea that a regional ZEP agent would gladly provide cleaning materials, hand cleaners, as well as shop materials although I was a little one-man store. I had no idea the variety of things I had accessibility to that would assist me until a person mentioned it or I saw it someplace else.Of training course, it isn’t 2001 anymore to ensure that indicates there are a lot even more means to locate this stuff and that’s why many people have trendy stuff in their home stores that you would not have expected 20 years back.

In this video clip from Jason at Fireball Tools he is discussing stuff that he could not live without in his very own shop. Some of it is things that Fireball makes and also markets, yet not all of it. Not by a slim chance. Inspect it out, see if you find out something, and also then get after it. It is the period for store upgrades as well as servicing jobs so maybe some of this things will assist you out on both matters.

Lancia Stratos HF Zero: The Future, From The Past

Lancia Stratos HF Zero: The Future, From The Past – Speedhunters

Lancia Stratos HF Zero: The Future, From The Past

Imagine for a moment, we’re living in the year 1970. The Boeing 747 has completed its maiden commercial flight; English rock band The Beatles have just announced their breakup; and NASA’s Apollo 13 has made its way back to earth after major issues. The average family car is a three-box design and enthusiast models generally offer performance by increasing engine capacity over their commuter-based siblings.

When the Lancia Stratos HF Zero concept was revealed at the 1970 Turin Motor Show, it was a a revelation compared to everything else on offer. Walking past this very car at the 2022 NEC Classic Motor Show a couple of weekends back, I almost missed it completely given its diminutive size.

Prior to the Turin event, Italian automotive design houses Bertone and Pininfarina had, for a short while, sought to outdo one another, each revealing their own concept car. The Bertone-designed Lancia and Pininfarina-designed Ferrari 512S Modulo squared up in 1970, but the Lancia was ultimately the more extreme vision of the future. It was also a fully running concept, whereas the Ferrari was not.

The Zero measures a scant 84cm (33in) to its roofline, a challenge that Bertone took on to see how low a car could be built. This had a practical significance as well, aiding aerodynamics. Bertone sought to not only break the predefined rules of what a car should look like, but also give an insight to, and ultimately usher in a new era of automotive design.

The headlights comprise of numerous bulbs along the front edge, with the taillights hidden in the circumference of tinted red plastic around the rear.

Rearward vision is somewhat limited, with an external central mirror and small side mirrors tucked into the back of each wheel arch.

Lifting the triangular engine cover exposes the 1.6L V4 engine good for 115hp. The engine, gearbox and entire subframe assembly along with suspension was taken from a crash-damaged Lancia Fulvia at the Lancia factory. This drivetrain was chosen primarily for its low deck height, being canted over at 45 degrees.

The interior is no less subdued than the exterior with the hinged windscreen connected to the steering wheel by way of a hydraulic linkage, so as one tilts away so does the other, allowing for slightly easier ingress and egress. No, there aren’t any doors as such.

Dashboard dials are tucked away in the panel to the driver’s left, along with toggle controls for the essentials.

20221111 NEC Classic Lancia 003

Bearing more than passing resemblance to the Lancia Stratos HF is no coincidence. While not a direct forerunner, the Zero generated enough interest for Lancia’s top-floor management to continue the relationship with Bertone and ultimately green-light the Stratos as a production car.

20221111 NEC Classic Lancia 009

Today, this one-of-one Stratos HF Zero lives with its owner in the USA, who has a penchant for what can best be described as ‘wedge’ cars. The equally outlandish Aston Martin Bulldog also resides in his custodianship. The Zero was in the UK as it had just been given a light restoration here.

I don’t believe we’ll ever live to see another era in which such creative automotive visions for the future take place. While safety understandably takes precedence, most cars nowadays are led by the finance department first and the design department second, which is a shame. This glimpse into what could have been certainly isn’t a bad one.

Zupra: A Wide, Low, 2JZ-Swapped 300ZX

<!–

Zupra: A Wide, Low, 2JZ-Swapped 300ZX

The Z32 Nissan 300ZX is an interesting car. Laden with tech from the factory, it was marketed as an attainable supercar alternative and, based on the success of previous Z models stateside, aimed at US buyers.

More than 30 years after its debut, the Z32 still enjoys a loyal following around the world, and its design has survived the test of time. The same can be said of the A80 MkIV Toyota Supra which, thanks in most part to its 2JZ-GTE engine, is another Japanese performance car icon. Imagine then, combining the best parts of each car. Jesse Laaksonen from Finland doesn’t need to; he’s already done it – and then some – with his ‘Zupra’ build.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-2

Thanks to a father who tuned and drag raced cars, Jesse became fascinated in the automotive hobby from a young age. In 2019, this 1995 300ZX – a USDM model that had been exported to Finland a decade prior – became Jesse’s first car. Back then it was still powered by its original VG30DETT engine, and the thought of swapping it out, let alone going crazy with other modifications around the car hadn’t even crossed Jesse’s mind. But that thinking didn’t last long.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-5

Around a year into the project, Jesse started researching the 2JZ platform and the swap process. Soon after, the Nissan was beating to the sound of a Toyota drum.

Before it was fitted in the Z32, the 2JZ-GTE received a new set of bearings and the factory twin-turbos were ditched in favor of a big single Holset hybrid unit. But Jesse only got as far as the first dyno session before the engine came back out for a proper refresh. It now features an upgraded crankshaft and forged pistons and rods, plus billet main caps.

The Toyota gearbox backing up the 2JZ uses a triple-plate OS Giken clutch that Juha Rintanen previously ran in his Nissan Silvia S15 Formula D car.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-18

Once the mechanical aspect of the rebuild was complete, Jesse turned his attention to the 300ZX’s appearance. Rocket Bunny S13 over-fenders were purchased and re-molded for the Z, and deep-dish 18-inch Weds Kranze LXZ wheels were fitted up.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-20

At this point, Jesse thought that the build was headed in the right direction, but felt like the exterior still needed some extra aggression. A GReddy front bumper and Bomex side skirts were acquired and fitted, the latter receiving some custom details from a local carbon fiber specialist. Finally, the steel and FRP bodywork was painted in a custom Midnight Purple hue with big metallic flakes for some extra sparkle.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-16

The aero-look was completed with a massive custom rear wing and my favorite small touch, Aerowolf mirror visors.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-19

To pull the whole look together, Jesse wanted to be able to drop the Z on the ground. A set of coilovers together with a Stanceparts air cup lift system allows the car to ride low, but also be raised up by 50mm at the touch of a button when required.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-11

The modifications continue inside the cabin with carbon fiber Bride Gias II seats and sought-after Willans x Nightrunner 4-point harnesses. The steering wheel is a Likewise Hellboi item and behind that sits an AiM MXG dash display.

300zx-2jz-zupra-by-wheelsbywovka-22

Currently, the 2JZ delivers almost 600hp to the Z’s rear wheels, but in the future Jesse wants to reach the magical 1,000whp mark. He says that the car is best described by its appearance, but the mean and low look is not only for show. Jesse doesn’t hesitate to hit the track from time to time, and the Z is still versatile enough to drive to the shops. What more could you ask for?

B. FORCE, CAPPS, M. SMITH CLINCH WORLD TITLES; PROCK, PEDREGON, ANDERSON AND A. SMITH GET WINS AT ACTION-PACKED AUTO CLUB NHRA FINALS

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2022) – Brittany Force captured her second career world title on Sunday, wrapping up a spectacular season with a Top Fuel world championship after a first-round victory at the 57th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) both clinched world championships at the 22nd and final event in the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season. Austin Prock (Top Fuel), Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won the sixth race in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs to cap off a spectacular 2022 season.

Force qualified No. 1 in her 11,000-horsepower Monster Energy dragster and then earned the championship with her run of 3.701-seconds at 334.90 mph in the opening round of eliminations. In a season that included five wins, 10 No. 1 qualifiers and the fastest run in Top Fuel history on Friday, Force, who advanced to the semifinals, picked up her second world title at her home track.

“It just seems surreal. I can’t believe we’re here and it ended up this way,” Force said. “I believed coming into today, I was motivated, and we got the job done. I want everyone to remember this day, here in Pomona with this team. We have been working at this all season long and then we struggled (early) in the Countdown. But we recovered when we needed to here in Las Vegas and here in Pomona.”

Capps earned his second straight world title – becoming the first back-to-back Funny Car world champ in 20 years – by finishing as the runner-up on Sunday in his 11,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra. It is his third world championship, which was helped by a shocking second-round loss from Robert Hight on Sunday, who finished second overall on the strength of eight wins. It was a thrilling conclusion to Capps’ first year as a team owner, which also included five victories and a clutch run on Saturday in qualifying to keep his championship hopes alive. Sunday also marked the only time Capps led the points all season – but it proved to be perfect timing.

“The Countdown was crazy. You think about the Funny Cars that had a chance, it just tells you the amount of competition in the field,” Capps said. “We’ve had so many amazing people around us and it’s like we don’t deserve it. I’ve leaned on some great people. Don Schumacher has been unbelievable. People like (Tim) Wilkerson, (John) Force, all these people I race against for a livelihood have checked on me and asked if there’s any way they could help me, which has been very cool. I just didn’t think this was going to happen.

“To win a championship then become a team owner and have that No. 1 on the car and then having to beat Robert Hight and his team, which has had phenomenal success here at this track, it just blows my mind that we’re here. It’s going to sink in soon.”

Smith earned his third straight world title in Pro Stock Motorcycle and sixth overall with a victory in the first round on his Denso Auto Parts Buell. It’s also the fourth in five years for Smith, who has forged an incredible dynasty in the loaded category in recent years. The sixth championship also meant a great deal for Smith, who picked up four wins in 2022, as it ties him with Andrew Hines and Dave Schultz for the most in class history. It was the goal all season and Smith was proud to make it a reality on Sunday.

“This Denso bike has been awesome this year,” Smith said. “Angie’s had a great bike. We took my motor out from the last two races and put it in her bike because we had a shout of being one and two in points and I think we just missed it but hats off to her. She’s had a heck of a season going to three finals this year and winning the last race and then I won four races and won the championship. To be the one Pro Stock Motorcycle rider who has won every Camping World Drag Racing Series championship so far is pretty amazing.”

In the Top Fuel final round, Austin Prock finished off his impressive run in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs, winning for the second time in the postseason by going a remarkable 3.641-seconds at 336.23 mph in the final round in his 11,000-horsepower Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist dragster. The career-best run sent him past Antron Brown and to his third career victory, also vaulting him to third in points to finish off the year.

“I’m so happy for (crew chief) Rahn Tobler,” Prock said. “I’ve had a blast working with him. He’s an absolute legend in the sport and to go out like he did tonight speaks volumes about what he’s done for the sport. That was the quickest run he’s ever made in history, and it was his last one. Then during the semifinals (against Brittany Force), we were the quickest side-by-side run (in Top Fuel history). I’m really proud of Rahn and I still get butterflies when I watch him roll into the staging beams. He’s accomplished so much in the sport, and he believes in me to drive his race car. He came out of retirement to come work with me and that means a lot to me. It gives me a lot of confidence and I’m glad we went out on top with him.”

Brown finished second in points by advancing to the final round for the fourth time in 2022.

Cruz Pedregon was dominant to close out the year in Funny Car, winning his first race of the year and setting a string of career-bests along the way. The topper was an outstanding 3.839 at 335.65 in his 11,000-horsepower Snap-On Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in the final round against Capps, putting the two-time world champ on a great path heading into 2023. Pedregon made four runs of 3.84 in qualifying and then was stellar throughout eliminations to pick up his 39th career victory.

“This weekend feels surreal to me,” Pedregon said. “I’ve had some really great cars I’ve been fortunate to drive in my career, but this car is the best race car I’ve ever driven by a long shot. It says a lot for the team. I do want to point out we added Lee Beard as a consultant on the car, but I have to shout out (crew chief) John Collins and the team who has been with me for two years now and give them the credit. What Lee brought to the table fit what we were already doing. It all came together.”

Greg Anderson didn’t grab a championship this year in Pro Stock, as Erica Enders rolled to her fifth title, but he did close out 2022 with a victory in Pomona, getting past Enders in the final round with a pass of 6.516 at 210.31 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro. It hands Anderson his 101st career win, as well as a perfect sendoff for departing owner Ken Black, who watched his final race on Sunday in Pomona.

“It was an emotional weekend for me. It’s been 20 years of glory, to be honest,” Anderson said. “It’s been a heck of a ride with (team owner) Ken, Judy, and the entire Black family. They’ve done everything for me. They’ve made all my hopes and dreams and wishes come true. I never dreamt in my life that I could ever achieve anything like this and I couldn’t do it without Ken Black. He absolutely made it happen.

“We had 20 great years together. I love the man, love the family. He’s like a second father to me. So, coming into the weekend in Pomona, we know we’re not going to win a world championship this year so really the only way to give him a small thank you for all he’s done. All the cards fell right today. I felt great all weekend. I felt good as a driver and had a good weekend of driving. My race car was fast and the chips all fell down right. I think it all came down to the best way I could have written the story, just like back at Indy. I think these wins, when I won Indy this year when I got No. 100 and this one to give Ken Black his final trophy, probably my two biggest wins. It’s incredible.”

Enders advanced to her 13th final round in 2022, the finishing touches on one of the most dominant seasons in Pro Stock history. She ends the year with a career-best 10 wins.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Angie Smith helped the team finish the season with a victory for the third straight year, knocking off Joey Gladstone with a 6.749 at 199.55 on her Denso Auto Parts Buell. Smith, who picked up her first win of the season, has now won the finale twice in the past three years, making it an all-Smith winner’s circle for the race and championship. She set the track speed record earlier in the weekend and then put together a string of quality runs on Sunday, finishing a career-best third in points.

“I just needed to go out there and qualify well and just turn on win lights,” A. Smith said. “I think my goal in qualifying was just to make straight runs and every run we were going faster and faster, so I knew I had a good bike going into race day. Everybody that we race are very tough competitors. I did my job and I won it on a holeshot (in the final round). I think I’d rather win on a holeshot over anything. It’s nice to outrun people but winning on a holeshot is pretty epic.”

Gladstone advanced to his sixth final round of the season, finishing second in points.

The 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season begins March 9-12 with the 54th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at historic Gainesville Raceway.

Less Is Sometimes More: A Simple BMW 2002

Less Is Sometimes More: A Simple BMW 2002

The BMW 1600 was an evolution of the Neue Klasse series, receiving revamped styling from Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen in-house at BMW in the mid-1960s.

The new design was to be shorter and cheaper than the sedans it was based on and would continue being sold through the entire 02 series production run. These simpler, lighter cars received slightly enlarged M10 inline-four engines over time, moving up from the initial 1,573cc to a turbocharged 1,990cc power plant in their most potent specification by 1973.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_006
2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_003

This is no 2002 Turbo, though. The car I drove a couple weekends ago – owned by my friend Darius – is equipped with the standard 2.0-liter mill paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_008

It’s a very slow car by today’s standards, and even in 1974 when this example was sold new 99 horsepower wasn’t really much to write home about.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_009

No real modifications have been made either; the car still has its factory single Weber carburetor, fairly unsupportive bucket seats, squishy stock springs, tiny 13-inch wheels, and tires with thick sidewalls. The only thing Darius has done beyond routine maintenance is install polyurethane suspension bushings.

Yet, wheeling around in this old machine was so much more fun than I imagined it could be.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_007

Simply put, BMW chassis are good, even ones designed 50 years ago. Now, in 2022 — amidst the deep sea of insanely modified cars, out of control wait times for quality parts, attention-seeking social media builds, and skyrocketing prices on vintage cars — this is your friendly reminder that sometimes less is more. Classic car ownership doesn’t need to break your wallet, and there’s so much joy to be found in a simple car like a stock BMW 02.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_010
2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_200

The suspension is compliant and user friendly, the open differential ensures you can’t make a costly mistake in an unfamiliar car — although a limited-slip unit would be nice — and the engine was surprisingly responsive around 4,000rpm. Sliding around in the cabin with the windows down makes you feel like you’re going much faster than you really are.

Still, the soft car was incredibly comfortable as it briskly made its way over the undulating surfaces on California’s narrow backroads and winding highways.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_013

It’s a classic car that you can live with, a car that you can get groceries in, a car that you can take on a road trip, and a car you can fire up at night to blow off some steam on your favorite road.

2022-BMW-2002-Darius-BaT_Trevor-Ryan-Speedhunters_019

Darius has done exactly this during his time with the car, but with his first baby on the way it’s time for the 2002 to move on. “I just can’t be that dad with four project cars and a newborn child.”

Not that the 2002 is a project, but you get the point. Darius is a responsible man, and if I was even a hair less responsible than I am, the 2002 would already be mine. Oh well – instead, it’s going up on Bring a Trailer soon.

Godspeed, little 2002.

How To Solve The 2nd-Gen 4Runner’s Biggest Problem

How To Solve The 2nd-Gen 4Runner’s Biggest Problem – Speedhunters

How To Solve The 2nd-Gen 4Runner’s Biggest Problem

The second-gen Toyota 4Runner is one of my favorite trucks. Its simple, utilitarian design is paired with bulletproof reliability and quality materials that last for decades.

This is why I picked up a Hilux pickup — or Toyota Truck as it was creatively called here in the US — for myself a couple years back. They are great vehicles, but one glaring shortcoming is their extreme lack of power. Going up steep grades I will sometimes find myself buried in third gear; they really are that gutless.

Scott Kanemura has a reasonable solution for this problem, which he’s implemented on his ‘5150Lux’ 4Runner: 1,200 horsepower.

In V6 spec this truck would have produced 150hp when new, and the four-banger version even less. Multiplying the power output of a vehicle by a full order of magnitude necessitates far more than just a simple engine swap, of course. Scott says that essentially just the shell of the Toyota remains, with a full chromoly tube frame taking the newfound chassis loads.

DSC03640

The power plant is an obvious one, and family-correct, too. The 2JZ-GTE has been fully built and stroked to 3.4L and features a beautiful fabricated exhaust that terminates through the passenger-side fender. It even has a muffler, but something tells me it’s still going to be a fair bit louder than the truck’s original engine. I love that someone has gone this far with a chassis like this, which the engineers at Toyota could have never imagined when this body style was originally designed in the late 1980s.

DSC03647

Then there are the wheels – 3-piece Volk Racing Gr.Cs, which left the RAYS factory in 17×7-inch sizing, most likely in the late-’80s/early-’90s, so period correct for the truck. In Scott’s possession they’ve been stepped up to 18-inch and are now much wider at the rear. How do these fit, you might ask? We’ll get to that in a moment.

DSC03637

Another cool exterior detail is the 3D-printed air inlet that’s integrated into the grille, through which turbocharger is able to suck cool, fresh air. The number of parts made from additive materials seemed to have increased exponentially at this year’s SEMA Show, and I would expect this trend to continue.

DSC03649

Inside, a set of custom-fabricated fixed-back bucket seats have been installed along with a composite dash and a polished aluminum console that houses a ratcheting shifter. The seats have minimal padding, and I feel like I might be terrified to be parked in one at speed. There is an Alpine stereo in the dash, though, so it appears that Scott can still jam out on his next grocery run.

DSC03650

If you thought the front of the cabin was barebones, the rear has been completely stripped and tubbed to accommodate the widened wheels and seriously meaty rubber. One of the things I really like about this build, though, is that it still looks nice back here. There are brushed aluminum panels, a bit of carbon fiber trim, and the cage is aesthetic. Often drag cars — and even show cars — will neglect to really finish off details like this, where as Scott’s truck feels intentional throughout.

DSC03633

You’ll also notice that the truck has a fabric soft top, à la Volkswagen Bus. Best of all, it took me a while to realize that this JZ 4Runner was parked up right next to an ultra-pearlescent McLaren P1. At the SEMA Show, builds like Scott’s take the cake.

DSC03635

As a builder, Scott has come a long way from his 1972 Hilux that Keith Charvonia featured in a Speedhunters spotlight from 2015.

I’m not sure what comes next after a truck like this one, but hopefully there are plenty of high-speed passes in Scott’s future before he moves on to another project.

For those of us in the automobile and also motorsports sectors, anyway, we struck Las Vegas every November for the SEMA Show and afterwards Indy for the PRI Show in December. With the pandemic holding off SEMA in 2020, everybody wondered what the 2021 show was going to be like and it ended up better than numerous expected. With that in mind every person is wishing for excellent things from the 2022 SEMA Show as well as we’re on hand to attempt and order as lots of pics of great cars and trucks and also trucks as we potentially can to share with you.

Together with the cars and trucks and also vehicles we’re also going to be considering parts and items and also enjoyable stuff we believe you guys will certainly like to check out. There is a great deal going on at the program this year, with various companies moving right into new rooms and with even more concentrated crowds as well as aftermarket firms.

It’s a little bit of an unusual year for the SEMA Show, when it come to the automobiles and also trucks on display. To me, it seems like there are fewer automobiles in cubicles and there are definitely fewer automobiles outside than the pre-pandemic years. What is right here is awesome, however there are way less muscle vehicles and road machines in attendance than is common. Is parts availability the reason? The rate of gas and also diesel? We know that the price for delivery autos has actually increased dramatically in the last 3 years, so possibly that belongs to it also.

No matter, we’re shooting what is below to share it with all of you, so appreciate the next gallery listed below. Keep in mind to click any kind of image to make it larger and to scroll with them all.
